Nippon Sangoku
日本三國
Nippon Sangoku, literally "the three nations of Japan," is set in a near-future Japan where nuclear war, natural disaster and misrule sparked a revolution and society collapsed. Civilization has rolled back to the Meiji era, and three nations, Yamato, Buo and Seii, vie for supremacy. The story follows Aoteru Misumi, a humble agricultural officer in Yamato who vows to reunify Japan to keep a promise to his wife, Saki. He rises through the ranks with old-world knowledge and eloquence, and is later hailed as a genius strategist. Author Ikka Matsuki says the manga is largely inspired by China's Three Kingdoms period. It has run in Shogakukan's MangaONE app since 2021, reaching seven volumes by September 2026, with no official English edition yet. Studio Kafka's 12-episode anime aired in 2026 and streams on Prime Video with an English dub. A sequel was announced that September.

The Borderland General of Yamato, in command of the army that guards the nation's frontier. He is upright and accomplished in both scholarship and the martial arts, and although stiff in manner, he earns respect from everyone around him.

The Minister of the Interior of Yamato, the man who actually runs the government. He seized power by poisoning the previous emperor. He shows no mercy to anyone who displeases him, and he arrives in the rural village where Aoteru lives at the head of a mounted column.

Ohga Wajima
輪島桜虎
The head of Seii's new regime. She overthrew the old government as it moved to surrender to Yamato, taking power in a coup and calling for a campaign against Yamato. Gentle in manner and strikingly good-looking, she has broad support among the people of Seii.
