This highland spreads across the ridge of the Hōō Mountains in the southern part of Shikokuchūō, Ehime Prefecture. Centered on the 892-meter peak of Suihamine, gentle grassland stretches across roughly 100 hectares. Known for its seasonal flowers and sweeping views from the Seto Inland Sea to the mountains of Shikoku, it is a popular destination for drives and hikes.
Admission and Hours
Rapeseed Flowers in Spring
From April into May, around 250,000 rapeseed flowers bloom across the slopes. A rapeseed festival is held to coincide with the season when the whole area turns yellow, drawing many visitors. The carpet of yellow set against the green mountains is a sight unique to the highland.
Cosmos from Summer into Autumn
From August to October, the cosmos flowers reach their peak. The heart of the blooms is the area around the aptly named Cosmos Observation Deck. Bush clover also blooms in early September, so the flowers continue without a break from late summer into autumn.
Views from Two Observation Decks
The highland has the Cosmos Observation Deck and the Hokuhō (North Peak) Observation Deck. From the Cosmos Observation Deck you look down on Lake Kinsha, and from Suihamine you can see across the Seto Inland Sea and the mountains of Shikoku. On clear days, you can sometimes see all the way to the Chūgoku region on the far shore.
Highland Walks and a Cool Escape
The grassland slopes gently, so you can stroll slowly while taking in the flowers. The walk from the parking area to each observation deck is short, easy enough even for families. Because of the elevation it stays relatively cool even in summer, and some people come simply to escape the heat.
Getting There
By car, it is about 40 minutes from the Mishima-Kawanoe Interchange on the Matsuyama Expressway. The road winds through the mountains, so it is best to allow plenty of time. In winter the road can freeze, so take care depending on the season of your visit.
