What Is Chiikawa? More Than Just Cute: An Introduction to Its Characters and World
Chiikawa is more than cute. A guide to Nagano's manga, its characters, world, and 2026 film.
The character Chiikawa, which has gained popularity in countries like China and South Korea, has recently been drawing increasing attention in Western countries as well.
The appeal of this work goes far beyond just being cute. If you've seen the manga or anime, you already know what makes it special: the dark undertones that occasionally peeks through, and the raw reality that makes us living in the real world think, "yeah, that's totally relatable."
In this article, I’d like to promote… rather, introduce Chiikawa's charm to English speakers.
About Chiikawa
The official title is Chiikawa: Something Small and Cute (Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu).
Creator Nagano-sensei started serializing it on X (formerly Twitter) in January 2020, and the official account now has roughly four million followers. Nagano-sensei has collaborated with Pokémon, Sanrio, and other major properties.
It started as a simple doodle. From there it became an anime, manga volumes, merchandise, and now a theatrical film is coming summer 2026.
The secret to its popularity is, above all, its unique world-building. To children it simply looks like cute characters doing cute things, but adults who watch it discover a world with surprising depth. We'll dig into that later.
Where Did Chiikawa First Appear?
Chiikawa first showed up on September 14, 2017 in a post with the caption "I want to be and live like this." The character already had appeared two and a half years before the serialization officially began.
“Title: I want to live like this

Middle right: N'gok gok gok (gulping sounds)
Bottom right: Ate it all
Bottom left: Waa waa pii pii (cheers and whistling)
Middle left: I just fall asleep right away / Kusu kusu (giggle)
Top left: Kusu kusu kusu kusu (giggling)
An illustration of wanting to be a creature who is cute just by existing, who gets praised simply for eating food.
At that time, Nagano was a popular creator of LINE stickers (digital stickers for the messaging app widely used in Japan), with series like "Self-Mocking Bear" (Jibun Tsukkomi Kuma) and "Mole Croquette" (Mogura Korokke) being the most well known.
Characters of Chiikawa: What Animals?
Three main characters exist at the heart of the story. What makes Chiikawa interesting is that character names almost never appear in the manga itself. Readers naturally come up with names based on appearance and traits, share them on social media, and those names eventually stick.
Chiikawa
The character's name is never revealed in the story, but since they're the protagonist, this character gets called Chiikawa. They either can't or don't speak much, communicating instead with abstract sounds like "Wa, wa..." or "Iyah!"
Chiikawa is timid, and when trouble strikes, they're shown getting flustered while still trying to push through somehow. When it matters most, they can summon courage and take action. A hard worker at heart.
A stand out activity in this world is weeding. In the Weeding Certification arc which we’ll touch on later, Chiikawa fails the exam multiple times. The tension this creates with their friends and their tearful efforts to improve became so popular with readers that fans cannot hide their excitement when a weeding certificate episode starts.
What Animal Is Chiikawa?
On May 1, 2026, the birthday of Chiikawa and Hachiware, it was revealed that the motif behind the characters is the hamster.
Until recently, the answer had been kept a mystery, and fans simply thought of the creatures as "something small and cute." Now, the official source has at last hinted that the characters are based, at the very least, on an animal in the rodent family.
Impossibly Lucky
Chiikawa's house was won through a lottery. They've also won numerous other items through giveaways and gachas.
- House
- Special-edition holographic card
- Secret mascot
- Rare-pattern DARS chocolate
- Corned beef
- Sukiyaki set
- Melon
- Dashi stock pack
The list will surely keep growing.
While their lottery luck is extraordinary, they tend to get tangled up with temperamental people and creatures. They have a knack for getting swept up in trouble, so their everyday luck isn't actually very good.
Hachiware
Hachiware is bright and friendly, and the only one of the three who speaks properly. Their catchphrase "...tte koto!?" (roughly "so that means ○○…!?") is familiar to every fan.
They're quite competent and hold a Grade 5 Weeding Certification. On the other hand, they're somewhat spacey, often misremembering things or misspeaking words, which frequently leaves them embarrassed.
What Animal Is Hachiware?
Hachiware is modeled after a cat. The name readers gave this character, "Hachiware," comes from a feline face pattern where the fur splits in a V-shape down the forehead.

However, the creator has said "it's not a cat," and shocked fans when Hachiware was shown eating onions and chocolate at an event (source: Nagano Exhibition).
The manga does show cat-like traits. Their tongue sticks out when concentrating, they sit in the loaf position, they shed their fur. Yet they are not a cat.
"Nantoka Nare!"
Alongside "○○...tte koto!?", the other famous catchphrase is "Nantoka nare!" (roughly "It'll work out!"). When they or their friends are in a pinch, one of them shouts this and takes action, and mysteriously it actually does work out. A signature development fans have come to expect.
In those intense moments when they're backed into a corner, you can't help but hope they'll say it.
Usagi
Usagi speaks even less than Chiikawa, communicating with sounds like "Ura" and "Yaha."
Free-spirited and marching to their own beat, Usagi has surprisingly high combat ability. Their weapon of choice is a mysterious double-ended staff loaded with some kind of explosives. They hold a Grade 2 Weeding Certification, making them the most qualified of the three.
Their home is never revealed in the manga, and their private life remains shrouded in mystery.
What Animal Is Usagi?
They look like a rabbit and their name is Usagi (rabbit in Japanese). However, like Hachiware, the possibility remains that they're just rabbit-like, not actually a rabbit.
When Usagi's birthday came around, a commemorative manga was released showing them in their true rabbit form.
Appeared Before Hachiware
Usagi actually appears in the very first episode, arriving before Hachiware, who's always with Chiikawa.
Their memorable debut? Sliding across pudding at incredible speed. Their actions are completely unfathomable, but that's what makes them Usagi.
The Chiikawa-zoku
Small, cute creatures like Chiikawa and their friends fill the background of the story. Fans collectively call these background characters the "Chiikawa-zoku" (the Chiikawa folk). They work, face scary situations, relax, each spending their time as they see fit, much like the main characters.
Yoroi-san
Unlike the Chiikawa-zoku, these armored figures have different body proportions. Despite their imposing appearance, they devote themselves to making cute things and show kindness toward the Chiikawa-zoku. They seem to hold more administrative roles, handling weeding and subjugation quest reception desks, running ramen shops, and so on. In one notable scene, an armored figure is seen eating with Chiikawa's group, then gets scolded by a leader-looking armored figure.
“"Hey."
"Wooaah, thank you for your hard work!"
"You're being too friendly."
"..."
Why shouldn't they be too friendly? This has sparked fan theories that the Yoroi-san are actually the ones managing the Chiikawa-zoku and their world.
Momonga
Cute in appearance, but with a twisted personality. As the story progresses, hints drop that inside Momonga is what fans call the soul of Dekatsuyo, a monster.
Having gained an adorable form, Momonga thoroughly enjoys that adorableness throughout the story. As for the soul that was originally Momonga... well.
Rakko
A mentor-like figure to Chiikawa and Hachiware. Rakko (based on a sea otter) is a "Ranker," an elite monster exterminator with considerable skill. They have a scar on their forehead and always wear a serious expression. Their measured way of speaking makes it clear they're no ordinary otter.
On the other hand, they have a sweet tooth, traveling to all sorts of places just to eat snacks. The moment they taste something sweet, their stern face softens into an endearingly slack expression.
Rakko is also one of the rare characters in the Chiikawa world who can drive a car.
Kurimanju
Kurimanju-senpai, famous for taking a sip of alcohol and releasing a satisfied sigh, "haaah." They’re said to be based on a honey badger or an otter.
They have a signature move: taking ordinary food and ingredients, adding a special touch, and transforming them into the perfect snack to pair with drinks. Many episodes feature arrangements that would impress even seasoned drinkers, a connoisseur even by Japanese standards. For overseas audiences, the dishes Kurimanju-senpai produces might leave them wondering, “What on earth is this food…!?”
In the Chiikawa world, drinking requires a license. Kurimanju earned theirs through extraordinary effort.
Shisa
A character modeled after the Shisa, the guardian lion-dog statues found across Okinawa. Having a mythical creature as a character stands out among Chiikawa's mostly animal-based cast. Nagano-sensei once lived on Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, which is likely the origin of this character.
In the Chiikawa world, working at a shop requires credentials. Shisa earned theirs and now works part-time at a ramen restaurant. They refer to one of the Yoroi-san as their "teacher" and look up to them, displaying an honest and cheerful personality.
The World of Chiikawa
The world where Chiikawa and friends live appears peaceful at first glance. Yet it's actually a rather harsh labor society, and things that make you go "Wait, what!?" show up regularly. Fans affectionately call this unique setting Nagano's World.
We’ll go into the main concepts that shape this world.
Weeding
Pulling weeds, receiving payment for it, and living off those earnings. That's one of the life cycles in the Chiikawa world. Weeding has a certification exam. Pass the written test and you earn a certification. Higher ranks bring higher pay.
No one knows what type of grass they’re pulling, why they're pulling it, or for whom.
Subjugation Quests
Chiikawa and friends don't just do weeding. They also take on hunting requests, heading out to defeat monster-like creatures. Serious injuries can happen, and sometimes they face irreparable situations.
Skilled individuals like Rakko are called "Rankers" and earn the honor of having a personal seal engraved on their weapons.
Wakidokoro (Food Springs)
Spots that suddenly appear in the Chiikawa world where food mysteriously springs up. The ingredients and flavors seem random. There's a limit to how much can appear before the spring "dries up."
Crowds gather wherever a wakidokoro appears, with waiting lines forming constantly.
Monsters and Chimeras
Monster-like creatures inhabit the Chiikawa world. Some are hostile, some friendly. How they came to look the way they do is unknown, though fan theories suggest they might be what the Chiikawa-zoku eventually become.
- Chiikawa had a dream where Usagi's arm became a chimera.
- Descriptions suggest someone they once knew became a chimera.
- In a parallel world scenario, a companion nearly became one.
These are the reasons behind the theory. What's the truth, and will it be revealed one day? Only Nagano-sensei knows.
Not Just Cute: Shocking Twists
Chiikawa captures attention not just because it's cute. Unsettling turns appear suddenly, and stories develop in unexpected directions. Here's a glimpse.
The Chiikabu Arc: A Cute New Friend
Among the creatures inhabiting the Chiikawa world are "friendly-type" monsters that don't cause harm. One of them, a small beetle-like creature nicknamed Chiikabu, becomes attached to Chiikawa.
After finishing a subjugation quest and returning home covered in wounds, Chiikabu comes running and holds them tight with their tiny body. Just having that comfort makes every day bearable.
But such days don't last forever….
The Black Meteor Arc: The Despair of No Tomorrow
"If you wish… upon a black meteor… your wish comes true. But... even if it does, you end up feeling awful," Hachiware says, beginning an unsettling series of episodes.
While living normal fun days, Chiikawa gradually realizes they're stuck in a loop, repeating the same day endlessly, suffocating under the despair that tomorrow, and the future, might never come.
In this loop, studying for certifications, the goal to grow stronger that they share with friends... nothing will matter. It's a story of Chiikawa fighting to reach a new tomorrow.
I remember following this in real-time and sharing Chiikawa's despair of not being able to get out of the loop today, again….
The Island Arc: An Ending Beyond Imagination
The longest arc in Chiikawa history is the so-called "Island Arc." It ran for about nine months from March to November 2023.
The usual three and Rakko take a suspicious-looking job offer promising 100 times the usual reward, heading to a tropical island under the guise of an "educational training camp."
The islanders welcome them warmly, yet something feels off. Sirens and mermaids appear. What's their connection to this island? It's a nail-biting episode where you can't predict what's coming.
The wholesome introduction plays like the calm before the storm in a mystery thriller. For readers familiar with Chiikawa, it only inspires a bad feeling of what’s to come.
The Island Arc becomes the foundation for the theatrical film coming summer 2026, Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island. From X serialization to anime to the big screen. The Chiikawa world keeps expanding.
About Nagano-sensei
Now let's look at Nagano-sensei themselves.
To put it simply, they're exceptionally skilled at using social media. They don't share political views or espouse what creators "ought to be," and has never made controversial statements.
That doesn't mean doing so would be wrong. It's just that the account stays true to its purpose of sharing manga and illustrations. Whether this is intentional or simply Nagano-sensei's natural character, we may never know.
Collaborations with Famous Works
As mentioned earlier, Nagano-sensei has official collaborations with Pokémon and Sanrio, releasing various merchandise.
Beyond that, fan art Nagano-sensei draws of works they love frequently goes viral, often leading to official collaboration merchandise. They frequently participate in official drawing campaigns and receive return illustrations from other manga artists.
For example, above is a post from Horikoshi-sensei of My Hero Academia, a manga/anime popular worldwide, thanking Nagano-sensei. Afterward, Chiikawa collaboration merchandise followed and was wildly successful.
Values Reflected in Chiikawa's Harsh World
In a past interview, Nagano-sensei answered as follows.
“"I don't put much deep meaning into it, but I like the merciless realities of living creatures, like how a praying mantis female eats the male. So maybe I want to depict that kind of raw animal nature.
Rather than wanting to convey a message or explore heavy themes, I feel stronger about wanting to draw how characters react and what expressions they make when something happens!"
Chiikawa Creator Interview: The Cute Yet Absurd "Nagano" World - KAI-YOU
The "merciless realities of living creatures," as Nagano-sensei puts it, may be the root of the frequent absurdities in the daily lives of characters in Chiikawa.
A certain portion of Chiikawa fans create fan art of the characters suffering, which they enjoy. Yet fans widely agree that "Nagano-sensei's own stories are far more brutal" than any of those derivative works.
The misfortunes that befall us, things beyond our control, also happen to Chiikawa and friends. But they always find their own way to recover and solve problems. They don't end merely traumatized.
It may perhaps be a literary work that continues to walk a fine line… neither simply putting its characters through suffering nor merely portraying them as cute.
Where Can You Watch Chiikawa?
So how can you actually experience Chiikawa? Honestly, the reach into English-speaking audiences remains limited, making it difficult to enjoy every aspect in English alone.
Original Manga
Nagano-sensei's free serialization on X (@ngnchiikawa) is most current. But it's in Japanese, so language ability is required. Unofficial English fan accounts exist, but how well they capture nuance is unknown.
It’s free, and you can enjoy it just by looking through it like a picture book, so it’s definitely worth giving it a try.
Collected Volumes
Tankobon (collected volumes) of the manga exist, but curiously, no English translation is available. Current translations in other languages include:
- Chinese
- Korean
- Spanish
- German
Perhaps English translations may be in progress somewhere.
Anime
The anime that started in April 2022 is available with English subtitles on Netflix. Depending on your location, you may need a VPN.
Doga Kobo handles production, with episodes airing weekly on Japanese broadcast TV. Each episode is about 2 minutes. Residents of Japan can watch via YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services.

Film
Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island releases summer 2026. Based on the Island Arc, watching the manga or anime Island Arc first, then catching the film in theaters would be one way to have an enjoyable experience.
Given current English support, theatrical releases in the West seem unlikely.
Game
March 2025 saw the global release of the official mobile game Chiikawa Pocket in 43 countries and regions, achieving three million downloads in the first week.
Goods/Merchandise
Within Japan, Chiikawa Land has expanded to multiple cities. If you’re visiting Japan, be sure to stop by!
Tokyo Station
Tokyo Skytree
United States
Additionally, in the United States, collaborations with MINISO have led to pop-up stores opening in places like New York and California, showing that expansion into English-speaking markets is rapidly gaining momentum.
In Closing
One article can't capture Chiikawa's philosophy, literary dimensions, and the pure, cute nature of its characters.
Nagano-sensei's word choice is remarkably skillful, so please try enjoying the Japanese version. The handwriting makes it somewhat challenging, but if interested, it could make for great Japanese language study.
The summer film Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island has not yet announced an English release. The story appears to draw on "Yao Bikuni," an ancient Japanese mermaid legend, so I'd like to explore that in another article soon.
