About Yokohama Hammerhead

Yokohama Hammerhead is a mixed-use complex on Shinko Pier in the Minato Mirai area of Naka Ward, Yokohama. Built around a cruise terminal, it brings together shops, a hotel, and a park on a single site. The building stands five stories above ground, with a total floor area of about 30,300 square meters. The shops and the hotel opened on October 31, 2019, and the first cruise ship arrived at the terminal on November 4 of the same year.

Food is the theme inside. The shopping complex, called Hammerhead SHOP&RESTAURANT, holds 25 shops. The first floor has the cruise terminal's processing area, the second floor has the hotel's front desk, and floors three through five hold the guest rooms. The design concept is THE FACTORY. In a space that looks like a converted port warehouse, shops sell things made on the spot.

The Hammerhead Crane

A large, grey industrial crane stands tall against a clear blue sky, overlooking a city waterfront with buildings in the distance.

In the middle of Hammerhead Park, a single crane shaped like a hammer still stands. That shape is where the name comes from. Its formal name is the Yokohama Port Hammerhead Crane.

The British firm Cowans Sheldon & Co. built it in 1913, and it was installed the following year, in 1914. It was Japan's first crane made only for port cargo handling, and it moved steel and other heavy loads of up to 50 tons. Shinko Pier, where the crane stands, was developed during the second stage of harbor construction, which ran from 1899 to 1917.

The crane has been through an earthquake and a war, and it no longer handles cargo. It still stands as a landmark in one corner of Minato Mirai. The plaza around it, about 3,000 square meters, opened as Hammerhead Park on August 28, 2020.

A building themed around food

The 25 shops range from a burger joint and a pizzeria to a soba restaurant and a coffee roastery. Five of them are set up like factory tours, with the whole production process out in the open. They include Kamakura Beniya Kurumicco Factory for sweets and VANILLABEANS THE ROASTERY for craft chocolate. You can watch the work up close, then buy on the spot. Just one of the five, AINZ&TULPE BEAUTY FACTORY, focuses on cosmetics and beauty, and it also shows how its products are made. Marine FM 86.1MHz, a community FM station, is in the building too.

Four new shops arrived in the spring of 2026. On the first floor, I'm donut? specializes in nama donuts, a soft and moist style of donut, and dacō is a bakery cafe built on the idea of an urban bakery.

Neo Nice Burger, also on the first floor, is the first location in Kanagawa Prefecture. The shop describes itself as combining a chef's serious cooking with the convenience of fast food. BAAN PHADTHAI, on the second floor, is a pad thai specialist from Bangkok, Thailand, and this is its first location in Japan. It has also been named a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide, an award given to restaurants that serve good food at reasonable prices.

The cruise terminal and the hotel

The terminal's functions are concentrated on the first floor. This section is called CIQ, after the initials of customs, immigration, and quarantine. Passengers arriving from overseas finish their entry procedures here. Berth No. 9 is 340 meters long, with a water depth of 9.5 meters. Large cruise ships in the 110,000-gross-ton class can dock there. The shops and the terminal sit in the same building. On days when a ship comes in, it is moored just outside the building where people are shopping.

The hotel, the InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8, opened on October 31, 2019, the same day as the shops. All 173 rooms measure at least 45 square meters. The front desk is on the second floor, where the shops are.

Hammerhead and Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island

Chiikawa is a manga that the illustrator Nagano serializes on X. Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island adapts its long story arc, known as the Siren arc, and it was released on July 24, 2026.

A post on Nagano's own account reports a visit here as part of a research trip to draw the ship scenes.

Nagano also wrote about enjoying a meal at a restaurant in Hammerhead during a fireworks event held to mark the film's release (the event has already ended).
