Kaigai Niki
Meaning
An internet slang term short for "kaigai no aniki" (overseas bros), used to affectionately refer to foreign users on the Japanese internet.
Primarily used on Niconico, YouTube streams, and social media to refer to foreign men. It is also used regardless of gender, such as when referring to a group collectively. When specifically referring to women, "kaigai neki" is used instead.
Origin
"Niki" is short for "aniki" (big bro). The word traces back to Hanshin Tigers player Tomoaki Kanemoto. Kanemoto was affectionately known as "Aniki" as the spiritual pillar of his team, but during a game against the Hiroshima Toyo Carp on May 13, 2008, he was caught on the TV broadcast camera smoking in a corridor behind the dugout. In response, users on 2channel's Nandemo Jikkyou Jupiter board (commonly known as NanJ) coined the derogatory nickname "Yaniki," a combination of "yani" (tobacco tar) and "aniki."
"Yaniki" became so widely adopted that even Kanemoto's own fans started using it, and its derogatory edge gradually faded. From this, the suffix "-niki" branched off as a general expression, used to address anyone with notable expertise or presence in a given field as if they were a big bro.
How "Kaigai Niki" Came About
"Kaigai niki" combines "kaigai" (overseas) with "niki," essentially meaning "foreign big bro." It emerged organically as a way to refer to foreign users who watched and commented on Japanese content on Niconico and YouTube streams. Japanese users who felt a sense of camaraderie with foreigners leaving comments on videos or posting reaction videos despite not understanding Japanese began calling them "kaigai niki" with affection.
Today, it is also commonly used simply as a friendly way to refer to overseas users in general.

It is worth noting that "niki" is simply used as a casual label and does not inherently carry a sense of respect or admiration.
While it is a casual and friendly expression, depending on context it can also be used mockingly.
Telling "Niki" and "Neki" Apart
"Neki" is short for "aneki" (big sis) and like "niki," is a derivative expression originating from NanJ. The basic rule is to use "niki" for men and "neki" for women.
Much like "guys" in English eg. “you guys”, "kaigai niki" is used when referring to a mixed group of foreign users regardless of gender.
