About CURE MAID CAFÉ
Cure Maid Café (CURE MAID CAFÉ) opened in Akihabara in 2001 and is a long-running institution known as “the birthplace of the maid café.” Inside the anime shop “Gee!Store Akiba,” staff in classical maid uniforms serve in a calm, “healing”-themed maid café. Unlike the lively “moe”-style places, its charm is being able to unwind over food and tea at your own pace.
Japan's first maid café
Among the many maid cafés out there, Cure Maid Café boasts a long history going back to its 2001 opening, and it officially bills itself as “Japan's first maid café” — very much an origin point. The chic, relaxed interior is bathed in warm lighting, and true to the name “Cure” (healing), it feels close to a classic tea room. There's no cover charge or flashy performance as at many maid cafés; you simply enjoy your food and tea at leisure.
It's also known as a “model location” for TV anime such as Love Live! and Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, and plenty of fans drop by on a seichi junrei (anime pilgrimage).
Collaboration cafés with popular titles
Another big draw is how often Cure Maid Café holds collaboration cafés with popular anime and games. At times several run at once, featuring limited-edition menus and original goods that recreate each title's world.
Past collaborations have been remarkably wide-ranging — Touhou Project, Love Live! (a collaboration tea blend), Hyperdimension Neptunia, The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You, and even New Japan Pro-Wrestling. When your favorite title is running, it's a special chance to immerse yourself in your oshi's world. It's best to check the official site or X (formerly Twitter) for the latest.
A café with excellent tea
Its dedication to tea is one of the café's real highlights. Certified as a “Delicious Tea Shop” by the Japan Tea Association, it keeps more than ten kinds of tea leaves on hand at all times. The staff are carefully trained in how to brew, so every cup is prepared with care, and there's a rich lineup of teatime treats like scones and waffles.
The food is substantial too — from the classic omurice to light bites and filling meals — making it great for lunch, dinner, or a late-evening café stop. Original blended herbal teas and the tableware used in the café are sold as goods and souvenirs, so you can take a little “healing moment” home with you.
It's open 11:00–20:00 (last order: food 19:00 / drink 19:30). During busy periods a numbered-ticket system may be in use, and seat reservations are available. If you'd like to quietly experience the “origin” of the maid café in Akihabara, this is the perfect place.
