RadioKaikan

Radio Kaikan is a hobby building right in front of the Electric Town Exit of JR Akihabara Station. Its official name is Akihabara Radio Kaikan, and it is nicknamed Raji-kan. Floors one through nine hold specialty shops for figures, trading cards, dolls, and secondhand hobby goods. The first basement floor has restaurants, and the tenth floor is an event space.

It started in 1950 as a two-story wooden building in front of the station. In 1962 it was rebuilt with eight floors, making it the first high-rise in Akihabara's Electric Town. K-BOOKS, Kaiyodo, and VOLKS opened shops here in 1998, and Akihabara's turn into a "town of figures" is said to have begun then. The old main building closed in 2011, and the current building opened on July 20, 2014.

Highlights Floor by Floor

The fifth floor has Kaiyodo Hobby Lobby Tokyo, a shop run directly by the model maker Kaiyodo. The sixth floor is taken up entirely by Yellow Submarine Akihabara Main Store ★ Mint, a general hobby store that carries everything from plastic models to trading cards and board games.

K-BOOKS occupies the third floor and AmiAmi the fourth. There are two VOLKS shops on the eighth floor, trading card shops cluster on the ninth, and the first floor has a gift shop and a convenience store as well (all from the official floor guide as of August 2026).

A Setting in STEINS;GATE

In the adventure game STEINS;GATE, Radio Kaikan appears as an important setting in the story. It is famous for the startling sight of a satellite lodged in the rooftop.

The real Radio Kaikan also holds collaborations with the series from time to time. At the 15th anniversary event in 2023, a special stage and a time machine sculpture were even set up on the rooftop.

Even after the anime based on the game finished airing, its popularity has held firm, a sign that this is a classic still loved today.

Opening Hours

The building as a whole is open from 10:00 to 20:00.

Kaiyodo Hobby Lobby Tokyo on the fifth floor opens at 11:00, and the restaurants on the first basement floor keep their own hours by day of the week, staying open later than the building itself. On weekdays, for example, they run from 12:00 to 22:30.
