Located at the westernmost end of Tokyo Metropolis, Okutama is a mountainous area rich in nature that can be visited on a day trip from the City center. With its valleys, waterfalls, and primeval forests, it is popular among people who enjoy hiking and camping.
Where is Okutama?
Okutama is located at the westernmost end of Tokyo and belongs to Nishitama District. It lies about 70 km west of central Tokyo, adjacent to the west side of Ome City, and shares prefectural borders with Tabayama Village and Kosuge Village in Yamanashi Prefecture. Situated in the headwaters area of the Tama River, it is part of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, an area of abundant natural beauty. Although it is within Tokyo, it is a mountainous region surrounded by peaks such as Mount Kumotori, which rises to around 2,000 meters.
Getting Around
It is convenient to use the JR Ome Line to get to Okutama. From Shinjuku Station, take the JR Chuo Line to Tachikawa Station, then transfer to the Ome Line and ride to the terminal Okutama Station; the trip takes about two hours. In some cases, you may need to transfer at Ome Station as well, so it is reassuring to check the timetable in advance. Using Okutama Station as your base, you can access destinations such as the Nippara Limestone Cave and Lake Okutama by local bus. Since the number of buses is limited, be sure to include your return time in your plans.
