About the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" Series

The series was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" from 1986 to 2004, and has been serialized in "Ultra Jump" since 2005. With cumulative circulation exceeding 120 million copies as of 2022, it is a manga loved both in Japan and overseas. As of 2025, Part 9 "The JOJOLands" is being serialized.

In the past, the series has collaborated with the global brand Gucci, and Araki-sensei participated in the Louvre Museum's bande dessinée project, exhibiting "Rohan Kishibe Goes to the Louvre," featuring Rohan Kishibe, a character from Part 4, among various other developments.

Part 1: "Phantom Blood"

This is the story of two young men—Jonathan Joestar, the son of a nobleman, and Dio Brando, who was taken in by the Joestar family—and the ancient Aztec "Stone Mask." Plotting to take over the Joestar family fortune, Dio becomes a vampire through the power of the "Stone Mask" and gains superhuman strength. Jonathan chooses to learn the power of "Hamon" to fight and stop Dio's ambitions. Although it is the shortest series overall, it is popular as the beginning of the long-standing feud between the Joestar family and their archenemy, Dio. In addition to anime and games, it was also adapted for a stage performance in 2024, among numerous other media adaptations.

Part 2: "Battle Tendency"

Set about 50 years after Part 1, Joseph Joestar, Jonathan's grandson, is the protagonist. Joseph heads to Mexico to search for Speedwagon, Jonathan's friend who disappeared during a ruin investigation, and encounters the "Pillar Men," who possess power and intelligence surpassing even vampires. After rescuing Speedwagon, Joseph, along with Caesar, the grandson of Jonathan's master Zeppeli, fights against the "Pillar Men" who aim to dominate the earth. This series gained popularity for its thrilling developments as Joseph and Caesar build their strength under their master Lisa Lisa and face formidable enemies. Another appeal of this part is learning what happened to characters from Part 1, such as Speedwagon and Erina Joestar.

Part 3: "Stardust Crusaders"

This series introduced "Stand abilities," which have become synonymous with the "JoJo" series. The story begins in Japan, 50 years after Part 2. One day, high school student Jotaro Kujo, who is suddenly possessed by an "evil spirit", is visited by his grandfather Joseph and Joseph's friend Avdol, who inform him of the resurrection of the vampire DIO. After breaking the brainwashing of Kakyoin, who appeared as an assassin, Jotaro sets off for Egypt where DIO is hiding, along with Joseph and others to save his mother Holly, who is being consumed by Stand power. Joined by Polnareff, a Stand user, and Iggy, a dog, they engage in deadly battles with DIO's henchmen. This series is popular for its battles utilizing diverse Stand abilities and has many fans.

Part 4: "Diamond is Unbreakable"

The setting is Morioh Town in S City, M Prefecture, Japan. The story begins when Jotaro, who has become a marine adventurer, visits high school student Josuke Higashikata, Joseph's illegitimate child. This series is notable for its various human relationships, including the battle over the Bow and Arrow that awakens Stand abilities, the daily lives of the people of Morioh Town, and the fight against a certain serial killer. Many unique characters appear, including high school students Koichi Hirose and Okuyasu Nijimura, manga artist Rohan Kishibe who has a cat-and-dog relationship with Josuke, Tonio who makes exquisite Italian cuisine, high school girl Yukako Yamagishi who loves Koichi pathologically, and Yoshikage Kira, a salaryman who loves peace. Part 4 also gave rise to several spin-off works created by Hirohiko Araki-sensei himself, including Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, Rohan at the Louvre (Gucci collaboration), and Deadman’s Q, all of which originated from Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable.

Part 5: "Golden Wind"

Set in Italy, this is an ensemble drama depicting Giorno Giovanna, DIO's son, aspiring to become a gangster, which he had admired since childhood. At the age of 15, Giorno meets Bucciarati, a member of the gang organization Passione that controls Italy's underworld, and reveals his ambition to defeat the boss of Passione and take over the organization. After joining the organization, Giorno works with and builds trust with teammates such as Narancia, Abbacchio, Mista, and Fugo. In the midst of this, the Bucciarati team is ordered to escort Trish, the boss's hidden child… This series is known for its human drama, including the protagonist Giorno who uses his support-specialized Stand to engage in battles of wits, and Bucciarati's manliness as he risks his life for the peace and justice of the town.

Part 6: "Stone Ocean"

This features the first female protagonist in the "JoJo" series. Through the battle between Jolyne Cujoh, Jotaro Kujo's daughter, and Enrico Pucci, DIO's friend, this series puts an end to the feud between the Joestar family and Dio that began in Part 1. In this part, in addition to Stand abilities, DISCs that can record memories and Stand abilities are introduced. Jolyne, who is imprisoned in a penitentiary due to a certain incident, fights alongside allies she meets there to thwart Pucci's ambitions. Although it has some complex aspects, this series depicts the connections and bonds between the Joestar family, Jolyne, and her companions, and has the scale and passion befitting a culmination. The spin-off manga Jolyne, Fly High with GUCCI features not only Jolyne Cujoh, but also Bruno Bucciarati and Leone Abbacchio, characters originally introduced in Part 5.

Part 7: "Steel Ball Run"

With the conclusion of the Joestar family story in Part 6, the series moves to a different world. From Part 7 onwards, it becomes a kind of parallel world, and characters reminiscent of those from past series appear as different people. Part 7 narrates, through Johnny Joestar, the activities of adventurers participating in a cross-continental race across North America and the conspiracy surrounding the "Saint's Corpse" behind the race. While the grand worldview and deep human drama are similar to past series, as the serialization moved from Weekly Shonen Jump to the monthly magazine Ultra Jump midway, darker settings and developments began to be depicted.

Part 8: "JoJolion"

Like Part 4, this is set in Morioh Town, S City, M Prefecture, Japan. It tells the story of Josuke Higashikata, an amnesiac young man who emerges from the "Wall Eyes" that appeared after a major earthquake, as he searches for his true identity. While it can be enjoyed without having read past works, the Joestar family, the Higashikata family, and Yoshikage Kira appear, and there are self-parodies of past series and past works, allowing fans of Araki-sensei to enjoy looking for small references. In addition to the "Saint's Corpse" that continues to appear from Part 7, keywords such as the "Wall Eyes" that draw out Stand abilities, the "Rokakaka Fruit" with mysterious powers, and "Equivalent Exchange" appear, developing a new type of JoJo story.

Part 9: "The JOJOLands"

This work began serialization in 2023. It is the story of a boy named Jodio Joestar, who lives in the Hawaiian Islands, America, striving to fulfill his ambition to "become extremely wealthy." As of December 2025, seven volumes have been published. Jodio, who attends school while also working for a criminal organization, is one day ordered by his boss to steal a 6-million-dollar diamond brought in by a Japanese tourist. Entrusted with a "mysterious lava" by the target, Japanese manga artist Rohan Kishibe, Jodio and his team members begin to investigate the effects of the lava. It will be exciting to see how the story develops from the confrontation with the "HOWLER Corporation," a regional infrastructure development company.
