With 1,806 seats, this is a large four-story opera house. The performance season runs every year from October to July, and all opera performances are accompanied by English and Japanese surtitles.
In addition, for designated performances, a “Backstage Tour” is held to introduce stage sets and theater facilities, and for theater performances presented by the New National Theatre, Tokyo, a “Theatre Performance Guided Tour” is also offered, conducted by the producer in charge. Details on participation requirements, how to apply, and participation fees are posted on the New National Theatre, Tokyo website and on the information pages for each performance.
Playhouse
This theater has a maximum of 1,030 seats and mainly presents theater and dance performances. It can accommodate two patterns of staging: the “proscenium style,” in which the stage is framed like a picture when viewed from the audience, and the “open style,” in which the stage juts out toward the front of the audience. Kabuki and kyogen performances are also held, and depending on the performance, English surtitles and accessibility services are provided.
The Pit
This is a small-scale theater with a maximum of 468 seats. The entire floor of the theater, including the audience seating area, is movable, allowing the seating layout to be changed according to the content and direction of the performance. In addition to a conventional stage, it is possible to place the stage in the center and sandwich it with audience seating, or surround it on all four sides, enabling free creativity. In addition to theater, noh and rakugo performances are sometimes held. At The Pit as well, English surtitles and accessibility services are provided for certain performances.
