Where is Ginza?

Ginza is a prominent commercial district located in Chuo City, Tokyo. It is bordered by Tsukiji to the east, Yurakucho to the west, Shimbashi to the south, and Nihonbashi to the north.

The main street, Chuo-dori, runs north to south through the center of Ginza and is lined with high-end brand shops. The area was named 'Ginza' because a silver coin mint was located there during the Edo period, and it has developed as a gateway to Western culture since the Meiji era.

Getting Around

Ginza is closest to "Ginza Station," where the Tokyo Metro's Ginza Line, Marunouchi Line, and Hibiya Line intersect. It is also about a 5-minute walk from JR "Yurakucho Station." Additionally, the Toei Asakusa Line's "Higashi-Ginza Station" is convenient.

From Haneda Airport, it takes about 40 minutes by transferring from the Keikyu Line to the Toei Asakusa Line. From Narita Airport, take the Narita Express to JR Tokyo Station, and from there it's about 15 minutes by foot or subway.

Within the Ginza area, it's convenient to walk around, and on weekends, Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian paradise.

About Ginza

Ginza was reborn as Japan's first Western-style district by the Meiji government after the great fire of 1872 (Meiji 5). Developed as a "brick street" lined with brick buildings, it became a symbol of Japan's modernization. The Wako Clock Tower, as an architectural remnant of that era, is cherished by many as a symbol of Ginza.

Centuries-Old Establishments and Tradition

Ginza is home to many long-established shops that have been in business for over 100 years. Famous stores such as "Shiseido Parlour," founded in 1894, and "Kimuraya Sohonten," founded in 1872, continue to operate and are beloved across generations. These stores are not just places of commerce but are important elements that shape Ginza's culture.

Origin of the Name "Ginza"

The name "Ginza" originates from the "Ginza Office," a silver coin mint of the shogunate during the Edo period that was located in this area. At that time, the region flourished as a financial center, and its legacy remains in the name today.
