Where is Asagaya?

Asagaya is a residential area located in [Tokyo-to/Suginami-ku] Tokyo's Suginami Ward, situated in the central eastern part of the ward. It is approximately 8 kilometers west of central Tokyo, centered around [JR Chuo-sen/Sobu-sen] JR Chuo Line and Sobu Line's Asagaya Station.

To the north is [Koenji], to the east is [Ogikubo], to the south is [Matsusho], and to the west is [Nishi-Ogikubo], neighboring other areas within Suginami Ward. The boundary with Koenji is particularly indistinct, and there are many cultural similarities.

Despite being within the 23 wards of Tokyo, Asagaya is characterized by its lush greenery and calm living environment, where old residential areas coexist with shopping streets. Geographically, it is located on the [Musashino Daichi] Musashino Plateau, with relatively flat terrain. The climate is almost the same as central Tokyo, with distinct seasons, hot and humid summers, and dry, sunny winters.

Getting Around

Access to Asagaya is very convenient. The JR Chūō Line/Sōbu Line [JR Chuo-sen/Sobu-sen]'s Asagaya Station is the main gateway, with access from Shinjuku Station in about 10 minutes and from Tokyo Station in about 20 minutes. Additionally, the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line [Tokyo Metro Marunouchi-sen]'s Minami-Asagaya Station is also available, making access from Shinjuku and Ikebukuro areas easy.

Around Asagaya Station, there is a shopping street called Asagaya Pearl Center [Asagaya Pearl Center] stretching north to south, with many facilities within walking distance from the station. While walking is convenient for moving within the area, there are also plenty of bus routes, providing good access to other areas within Suginami Ward, as well as towards Nakano and Kichijoji.

Bicycle travel is also popular, with multiple rental cycle stations and bicycle parking areas around the station. Taxis are also readily available in front of the station, making it convenient to travel to unfamiliar places. Asagaya is a highly convenient area for both tourism and daily life, thanks to its good access from major areas in Tokyo and the abundance of transportation options within the district.

The "Asagaya Pearl Center," a shopping street that symbolizes Asagaya, is an arcade shopping street that stretches for about 650 meters. From long-established stores dating back to the early Showa era to unique shops catering to young people, about 200 stores line the street, cherished as the local residents' kitchen.

During the "Asagaya Tanabata Festival" held every August, this shopping street is adorned with colorful Tanabata decorations, attracting about 500,000 visitors to Suginami Ward's largest event.
