Things to Do in and Around Kamikawa

Kamikawa is a nature-rich town located almost in the center of Hokkaido, spreading at the foot of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is known for its beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons, particularly the magnificent gorge beauty of Sounkyo, which attracts many tourists from both inside and outside the country. Outdoor activities are also popular, with hiking and rafting in the summer, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Where is Kamikawa?

Kamikawa Town is located in the central part of Hokkaido and belongs to the Kamikawa Subprefecture. It is bordered by Kamishihoro Town and Shintoku Town to the east, Minamifurano Town to the south, Biei Town to the west, and Aibetsu Town and Toma Town to the north. It is situated in the eastern part of Daisetsuzan National Park, and in the western part of the town is Mount Asahi (2,291m), one of Japan's 100 famous mountains.

Kamikawa Town spreads across the upper basin of the Ishikari River and is characterized by a basin-like terrain surrounded by mountains. The climate is typically inland, with relatively large temperature differences between summer and winter. Winters are harsh with abundant snowfall, while summers are relatively cool and comfortable.

Getting Around

Access to Kamikawa Town is generally via the JR Hokkaido Soya Main Line. Kamikawa Station is located in the town center, about 1 hour from Asahikawa Station and approximately 2.5 hours by express train from Sapporo Station.

In winter, the operation status may change due to snowfall, so advance confirmation is essential. It takes about 1 hour by car from Asahikawa Airport to Kamikawa Town, and about a 3-hour drive from Sapporo via the Doo Expressway and National Route 237.

Within the town, there are route buses, but since the number is limited, using a rental car is convenient. Especially when visiting natural spots like Daisetsuzan National Park and Sounkyo, a private car or rental car is more flexible. Taxi services are also available, but it is recommended to book in advance.

During the tourist season, shuttle buses to Sounkyo and Daisetsuzan are also operated, available from major hotels and Kamikawa Station.
